What’s in a name? A lot, apparently. Whether by choice or design, Sophie Klein* embodies the Greek and Yiddish/Germanic origins of her name. This Melbourne-based folk and alt-country songstress is small in stature, but can tell a towering story with the wisdom of an old soul. Sophie’s voice is smooth, feminine and perfectly matched to her songs; a sound that is both tender and gritty. She carves out beautiful narratives of love, loss, family and relationships in the vein of Jackson Browne and Lucinda Williams.
Little Wise is currently completing her debut full-length studio album. The album will be released in late 2016 and supported by a Crowdfunding venture backed by Creative Partnerships Australia via their MATCH funding program.
Little Wise has performed around Australia in pubs, halls, living rooms and even laundromats and churches. She is a favourite on the folk festival circuit, with appearances at Yackandandah, Candelo Village and Mount Beauty to name a few.
Sophie ‘takes a gypsy-like approach to making music, straying beyond the boundaries of folk and roots to incorporate elements of blues, soul and country’ (The Mercury, TAS).
Joining Klein for a special performance at The Wesley Anne is collaborator and fellow songstress Rosie Burgess on bass guitar and backing vocals.
*Klein= “little” [Yiddish], Sophie = “wise” [Greek]
