Singer-songwriter Oliver Downes blends soaring melodies with percussive piano and precise lyrical musings. Described as ‘Leonard Cohen meets Philip Glass’ (Paul Cosgrove, Blue Mountains FM), his 2014 EP ‘at the end’ offered something by turns melancholy, uplifting and opaque. Oliver’s debut album ‘ultraviolet’ (set for release in late 2016) develops his lush soundscapes in directions both psychedelic and refined with the aid of art-folk trio The String Contingent, tripping the boundaries between instantly hummable chamber pop and the experimental margins of folk to chart a musical passage through the darkness into the light.
