Colin Lillie

Colin Lillie

Band Room // $15 + BF Pre-sale, $20 Door

Colin Lillie is one of a kind - this you discover within moments of hearing the “Gypsy Scotsman” and proud adopted Territorian share his song. Beyond that, what’s truly special about Lillie is his passion for life and music. Capturing the kind of intensity that Colin has on an album or a live performance is something that every musician aspires to. Whether it’s because of past experiences, a knack for songwriting, his powerful voice or a combination of these things. What remains true is that every time Colin Lillie picks up a guitar and sings something special happens - the passion shines through, and the music becomes real.

After a hard-won battle with addiction Lillie discovered his soul’s voice. In 2012 Lillie released an EP beginning a journey of magic, which has audiences mesmerised to this day. In 2013 he won the NT heat for Telstra Road to Discovery and also had the great pleasure of working with Bill Chambers helping to produce wife and Indigenous artist Jacinta Price’s album Dry River. In 2014 along with producer Dave Crowe (Resin Moon) and Ben Allen (Broadwing and producer of Gawurra's album Ratja Yaliyali) as the group Shadows on Blue they recorded a self titled EP, which saw them gain success with licensing and airplay both in Australia and USA. In 2016 Lillie released his debut album Glass Homes.

This album allowed him to share his truth with genuine songs that cut straight to the bone. Recorded and produced by Mark Myers (Middle East) in his Cairns studio, the two men were successful in creating an incredibly honest album. Colin’s first single, Give Thanks won him NT Song of the Year (Blues and Roots) and saw the honest troubadour tour and impress crowds all over Australia with his intense live performances. Follow up singles Renegade and Within, both gained raves reviews with their music videos. The debut album also earned critical acclaim from some of Australia's top music reviewers:

“With his debut record, Lillie has reached within himself and brought forth something truly special; a glass house is one thing, open for the world to see, but a Glass Home is another entirely.” - The Guardian 4/5 stars.

-“A compelling debut album, packed with vocal power, poetry, passion and palpable honesty” - The Australian 4.5/5 stars

With continual performances around the country Lillie has managed to prove himself as one of the Northern Territories and Australia's best performers winning himself the first ever National Live Music Award NT. With such command Lillie gives thanks to a loyal following who helped him gain the AU Reviews Peoples Choice Australian Artist of the Year, which he continues to grow where ever he performs. He has began writing for the follow up to Glass Homes with the support of Graham (Asho) Ashton from Footstomp Music and producer Jamie Trevaskis who produced the award winning Leanne Tennant (Red Wine, Late Nights). Both are pushing Lillie to delve deeper in order to produce more rich and darker songs.

Colin has built a strong relationship with Catherine Britt (Rhythm Magazine) with promises of future collaborations. Lillie is determined to show that no matter how remote you are you can build a successful career in music while continuing to perform live in front of audiences around Australia and beyond. Colin’s ultimate goal is to share his unique style and story to as many audiences in Australia and beyond. To collaborate and grow as a writer and musician and share that which has proven to be a gift for everyone who has heard it.

Christopher Skepper-trpt.,Chris Pappas-tsax., Nashua Lee-gtr., John O’Hagan-dbass, Chris Lewis-drums. SHOL is a quintet from Melbourne that has been performing and recording since 2012. They are a contemporary jazz ensemble whose original compositions cover hard bop, free jazz, world and soul
music. They have developed a personal and unique ensemble sound and are all composers in their own right. All the members of SHOL have paid their musical dues over a period of many years performing, composing and collaborating with many of Australia’s finest jazz musicians. These musicians have come
together forming a solid and highly experienced unit writing original compositions for their musical inspirations, paying homage to Coltrane, Coleman, Davis, Monk, Mingus, Taylor, Blakey etc. The music takes you on a journey exploring melodic themes, moods and rhythmic textures, building on compositions demanding freedom in improvisation.

“Shol have certainly developed a most engaging sound and their original pieces reflect a commitment to thoughtful, intelligent composition.” Jack Beamish-Jazz Spectrum Oct’14

“Shol prove themselves to be fearless, and rightly so. As improvisers they are inventive, soulful and adventurous. Their interaction is exemplary, similar to supergroups as the Cookers, to mention yet
another band that looks to the spirit of post-bop for inspiration. By creating this delightful labor of love and devotion, Shol can affirm that it definitely pays to follow the straight and narrow path.”

Band Room // $20 Pre-Sale, $25 Door

Globe trotting troubadour Carus Thompson has toured the world alongside The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson & Pete Murray, selling over 30,000 albums along the way. A renowned songwriter and storyteller in late 2019 his 7 th studio release Shakespeare Avenue came out to critical acclaim and solid radio play.

For the recording of Shakespeare Avenue, Thompson moved his family to the South-West of England, to immerse himself in folk traditions and to write and record with a new approach. His narrative, character based emotive songs have long earned him comparisons to Springsteen and Mellencamp, however this time there is also a distinct Richard Thompson, Christy Moore, Dick Gaughan, Anglo- Cetlic Edge.

Part of the lure of England was Thompson’s connection to Folk star Seth Lakeman (who has spent the last two years touring the world with Robert Plant) and his Mercury nominated producer brother Sean Lakeman. These two, longside Sean’s partner Kathryn Roberts are a “virtual folk dynasty” – highly respected on the international folk scene. Sean produced Shakespeare Avenue, and the entire trio feature on the record - lending their considerable musicianship and heavyweight folk expertise. The connection with them, together with the move to England has paid dividends, resulting in Thompson’s most artistically direct to date.

A renowned live performer, Thompson will deliver these new songs as well as old over two set sets for a special Valentines Day performance. The capacity will be limited to only 80, so that every ticket comes with a seat. Come and down and enjoy the intimate vibe that is The Wesley Anne whilst being entertained by one of Australia’s favourite acoustic artists.

Benjamin Trillado

Front Bar // Free

Melbourne singer/songwriter Benjamin Trillado is known for his unapologetic candour and tear-jerking performances. Obsessed with the awkwardness of life and human error, Benjamin's lyrics can be painfully relatable as he sheds light on topics we tend to shy away from.

Growing up Benjamin listened to artists that ranged from Janis Ian to Beyoncè. His eclectic taste in music helped him shape a sound that borrows elements of folk, rock and soul.

From sharing the stage with many acclaimed artists like Ben Abraham, to being mentored by song-writing powerhouses like Ainslie Wills, Benjamin has commanded stages all over Melbourne with his storytelling and powerful vocals.

Zinnia Blue

Band Room // $10 Pre-Sale, $15 Door

Melbourne alt-country duo Zinnia Blue are thrilled to announce the launch of their debut album The Garden, an independent production crafted piece by piece over four years. A genuine labour of love, the eleven track long player features an eclectic set of original songs and two haunting cover songs from Melbourne's own Jordie Lane and Tracy McNeil, and famed American singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. Showcasing lush but subtle layers of instrumentation, each song has been arranged to accentuate its particular mood and style. The album journeys through diverse genres of country, bluegrass, folk, blues, and pop, but plants its feet firmly in Americana soil, with an organic Melbournian twist. The band celebrate the release with a Tasmanian and Victorian tour, including shows at the Cygnet Folk Festival in January, and an album launch at the Wesley Anne, Northcote on 9th February, joined by special guests Tim Woodz, and Phoebe & Schina.
