Music of Crete – Μουσική της Κρήτης

Band Room // $20

Two nights dedicated to music from the island of Crete, Greece. Featuring Nikos, Antonis and Apollonia Xylouris on lyra, lute and percussions respectively. Children of George Xylouris (of Xylouris White fame) and grandchildren to the legendary Cretan lyra player Psarantonis, these three are flamekeepers for their family name, which spans several generations of musical heritage both back home and here in Melbourne. Alongside them is Paddy Montgomery, who has studied Cretan music with their father George and also with Ross Daly. This music is not what you would associate with the stereotype of Greek traditional music.Whilst being uplifting and energetic it can also encompass a rather a heavier, more sinister sound with driving rhythms and almost hypnotic phrasing. Traditional instruments such as the lyra (three stringed fiddle) and laouto (steel-strung lute) are featured in a repertoire of both traditional and contemporary songs and instrumentals.
