Jessie Monk

  • Wesley Anne 250 High Street Northcote, VIC, 3070 Australia (map)

Under a Waning Gibbous Moon, step out of the neon-monotony of high st and into the mythic grounds of Mis. Avant-folk artist Jessie Monk, joined in a spirallic quartet with Aidan Ryan (NoLess), Arlon Faria, Patrick Pheasant and other fae-guests - continues the voyage through the mountains of Mis' tale - this time in celebration of her momentary Naarm departure (Jessie will be based in Sydney from Jan - April 2025 to perform in Anais Mitchell's - HadesTown). The concert will venture through the ancient celtic myth of Mis - in Jessie's original compositions - this time weaving in some traditional songs with some exciting special guests. Those who attended Gold Flowers, the first chapter of Mis' birth will be delighted by the many new brooks and estuaries of this expanding trio - those who have yet to meet Mis' world - it is a world of experimental folk/jazz fusion with arrangements that contemplate a timeless feminine, underworldly journey through grief, song, love and magic.  For fans of Sam Amidon, Lankum, Joni Mitchell, Wilco or Anna Mieke, it promises an enchanting, mythical evening of avant-folk music.

Jessie Monk:

Jessie Monk is an avant-folk musician out of GunaiKurnai land, Australia, now based between Berlin and Naarm. She weaves new stories with old threads, inspired by the Celtic and Appalachian folk traditions and more experimental mediums such as new-music and Butoh. Often accompanied by a renegade ensemble in Fabiana Striffler, Max Andrzejewski, Paul Santner and Conor Cunningham,  Jessie Monk and Band create an atmosphere of tangible and, at the same time, experimental folklore and thoughtfulness, enchanting audiences with their mythical and eruptive playing style. Her sound is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Sam Amidon or Anna Mieke while her lyrics are inspired by the likes of Rilke and Ovid. Also an actress and a dancer, Jessie has played in major musicals including the Australian Premier of David Bowie’s, Lazarus. In 2023, she released her debut, ‘Boundless Folk LP’ - Rolling Stone Magazine, Continually Becoming, and has just begun releasing her sophomore album - Mis O’ The Mountains - a concept album based on the myth of the ancient celtic goddess named Mis and will be performing in Opera Australia's production of Anais Mitchell's HadesTown in 2025.
