Jack Phemister is a songwriter and performer from Yass, NSW, currently residing in Melbourne. Enamoured by poetry and voice leading, he explores the interactions of the mind with its surrounds, and the voice with guitar. Key influences include writers like Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave.
Originally a solo performer, Phemister has explored a range of band configurations over the last few years, with his latest outfit consisting of Melbourne based Jazz musicians, Jack Smythe (bass), Kieran Rule (drums), and Tom Bell (woodwinds). The band works as a natural extension of Phemister’s distinctive playing, drawing from contemporary and traditional Jazz, Rock, and Folk styles.
This iteration was formed to record Phemister’s debut album, ‘Death of the Close Minded’; an exploration into the concomitant difficulties of recognising ones faults, finding the right voice, and figuring out which way is forward. The album was self recorded and produced by Phemister and the band in a converted living room on the Great Ocean Road, then mixed and mastered by Jonathan Anderson at Protection Island. Come celebrate the album’s release with a full band show at the Wesley Anne with Inlove Online & Norwood!
