An exciting new arrival in the Melbourne scene, James O’Brien presents an exciting evening of jazz standards alongside his dynamic trio.
James’ distinctive sound is creative and forward-thinking, yet firmly grounded in the rich tradition of jazz. His versatile and virtuosic piano playing has been noted for its ‘maturity belying his youth’.
A graduate from the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), James has performed with award-winning groups such as the Horizon Art Orchestra, Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble, Perth Cabaret Collective, Libby Hammer Quartet, the WA Jazz Project, and the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra – among others.
During his career, James has shared the stage with a range of notable artists including Dick Oatts, Kate Ceberano, Jamie Oehlers, Mat Jodrell, Sam Anning, and Gian Slater. He also has been recorded on a number of albums as a sideperson, including Daniel Susnjar’s WAM Award winning ‘The Recipe’ (2020).
Joined by Melbourne stalwarts Ross Anderson on bass and Luke Andreson on drums, the James O’Brien Trio explores harmony, rhythm, and texture as they capture a sound made famous by the likes of Oscar Peterson, Benny Green, and Ray Brown.
